Writer and wild swimmer Freya Bromley dives into her new memoir, The Tidal Year. Elegiac, darkly comic and beautifully scenic, the book is a hymn to love, friendship, grief and the restorative powers of nature and swimming, dedicated to Bromley's late brother.

Meanwhile US author Kathryn Scanlan shares the story of her latest book Kick the Latch, a clipped but vigorous insight into the hard, fast world of horse-racing. Based on a series of transcribed conversations with a horse trainer named Sonia, it's a "composite portrait of a self" that's neither entirely fact... nor fiction.
